You seem to be under the misapprehension that we don't have to work for our livings.

Actually creating and maintaining the Unity DE was costing Canonical a ton of money and they decided to ditch Unity in favor of the Gnome 3 DE.

BTW you can still install the Unity DE in 18.04:

If you care to name the features you miss/want, people will be able to direct you to a desktop environment that has those features.

P.S. The desktop environment in 16.04 was Unity and although I don't personally use, it is still installable from the default repositories
and from a quick test seems to work ok.

Wow I should feel privileged that mycurbside find a Dell Optiplex 380 (2010) desktop with it's Intel Express Integrated Graphics runs Ubuntu18.04 LTS without any difficulty or problems.

Yup. Could've asked a few simple questions and had his/her fix.

All the features in Ubuntu 14.04 will work for me, thanks.

I still have the same car I bought twenty years ago and it is still running perfectly fine for me. I also still live in the same house I bought eighteen years ago and have the same stove and fridge I bought then. I even have the same computer I bought eight years ago and it is still purring like a kitten. The only thing I still use that is declared dead by other people is Ubuntu 14.04. O, I almost forgot, I also still use Windows XP on a virtual machine on the same eight year old computer. Although WinXP was also declared dead some years ago already, it is also still living quite happily with me.
