    Work in progress: Developing Wayland extension protocols for Mir servers

    Alan Griffiths (alan_g) follows through and provides a means for a shell developed with Mir to add its own extensions. The last piece of code has been merged to allow testing extensions in a downstream shell.

    Simos Xenitellis writes on the setup of a LXD container to run graphical programs. Simos details the installation of Steam in a 64-bit system, wherein the method to also install Wine is given.

    Valve’s Pierre Loup gives us some background on the 32-bit support situation, explaining why it's determined to stick with archaic 32-bit software. Foremost is customer support. With Canonical's clarification, they will likely be able to continue supporting Steam on Ubuntu moving forward.

    Moving webchat to Kiwi IRC

    Fuchs, ilbelkyr advise of the migration of the old qwebirc based webchat to a new Kiwi IRC based solution for freenode. Listing some of the enhancements and changes is an advisement that "we will no longer apply gateway cloaks". Thanks are extended to the many who supported the migration, in particular is noted Kiwi's developer, prawnsalad. The old webchat will no longer be available after the migration.

    Tim Anderson gives a rehash of the 32-bit controversy, sharing Steam and Wine's stated positions in respect to Canonical's announcements. It is not clear what the results of negotiations will render.

    Steam and Ubuntu clash over 32-bit libs

    Jim Salter writes of the lively week starting with Steve Langasek's announcement on 32-bit libs which may have been unclear. Two days later a new announcement was out which settled things a bit. Jim acknowledges the difficulties in maintaining 32-bit code and provides quotes of Canonical's mitigations to continue to run 32-bit applications. Finally is speculation as to Steam moving to another distribution.
