Which Ubuntu should I go with?

XUbuntu or LUbuntu? This will be for a newer thinkpad....
Please tell me the upsides and downsides of each. I've narrowed it down to these two....
Any insight/advice would be great, thanks.

/edit prefer something with no bugs, and being very stable....
and that requires little to no configuration, runs fine from a fresh install.
Also prefer something that still get updates, so that it's not a dead Distro, if that makes sense....

They both have the same support cycle. I recommend trying them both and using whichever makes you happy.

Lubuntu is slightly lighter but I prefer Xubuntu.
I always get window placement quirks with some apps in Lubuntu.

I use Kubuntu 18.04. installed it and it runs well so far. i use vanilla setups as i don't have time to mess around with the OS. i did change the background wallpaper though.

from the ones you posted i would chose Xubuntu. it is very easy to configure and use. fairly mature desktop.

Lubuntu is also a good choice bu t i believe they are now in the middle of move to LXQT, so it might still have some rough edges.
Easy to understand Ubuntu manual with lots of pics: http://ubuntu-manual.org/
Do i need antivirus/firewall in linux?
Disk backup (works on newer PC): Clonezilla

Re: Which Ubuntu should I go with?

    Try them both!

The Xfce desktop is deliberately slow to develop, so there won't be these huge major radical changes to the desktop like both Gnome and KDE have done. The LXDE desktop is also undergoing a major change, from GTK to the Qt base. A smart move, perhaps, but big changes like that also haven't had time to work any bugs out. Xfce has a really slow and deliberate way of making changes, a little at a time, that don't upset their users and make the desktop buggy. And in spite of it's younger sibling's rapid growth, Xfce doesn't need that much improving to begin with! It's infinitely configurable, wonderfully simple, and a speedy, nimble desktop. Xubuntu is the way to go, especially for newbies!

Both flavours have their loyal followers but you probably need to try them both (in a live session) if you haven't already as they look and feel very different. My vote would be for Xubuntu due to the Xfce updates and/or enhancements being relatively 'low key' from one release to the next.

Don't forget Ubuntu MATE. It is also lightweight (<500MB at idle, freshly installed). It is extremely configurable, and can look like Windows, OSX, or Unity. The default top-menu style is default, and I will use no other desktop.

MATE development is conducted at https://wwwubuntu-mate.org, and you'll always get the latest version of my favorite desktop.

I drink my Ubuntu black, no sugar.

You should start a new thread with your hardware specs so folks can give you proper advice.
