    the Ubuntu repository

The repository still has GIMP 2.8. That version is so old it has barnacles. Is the repository managed any longer? Or is there an alternative repository that stays up to date?

    Re: the Ubuntu repository

Only security updates are pushed to the repositories once an Ubuntu version has been released, if you want an newer version of software you have to install it from another source.

I believe the snap and flatpack versions are Gimp 2.10. You can try the following command .
    Code:
    sudo snap install gimp
    To remove
    Code:
    sudo snap remove gimp
“Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can".

    Re: the Ubuntu repository

Gimp 2.10 was released after Ubuntu 18.04, so there's no way it could have been included. Such a long gap between 2.8 and 2.10 is entirely down to the Gimp project.

Gimp 2.10 is included in the repositories for Ubuntu 18.10 & 19.04. There is also a PPA, and the snaps that have already been mentioned.

In my experience older software is reliable and has the bugs worked out of it and works.

The latest newer software doesn't always have the bugs worked out and can be problematic.

If it still receives security updates and works what difference does it make how old it is.

    Only an opinion.

The Snap install got me the latest version. Snap seems to work well with Ubuntu. There must be a lot of politics going on at GIMP. You have to dig deep in their site to find anything but a Flatpack download. They don't even mention Snap.

The Snap Store. I had no idea. Thank you Sir. That opens a whole new world.
