    Multipass updates for April 2019

    Michał Sawicz (saviq) provides the highlights of the activities in Multipass. In the six notices are the release of Multipass 0.6.1 beta enabling you to launch images of Ubuntu releases that are out of standard support, fixes for launching disco instances, and long operations now run concurrently.

    Trusty 14.04 LTS end of life, and end of Kubuntu support for Xenial 16.04 LTS

    The Kubuntu team advises on Kubuntu 14.04 LTS' ‘End of Life’ and users are recommended to make a clean fresh install of 18.04 or newer. Kubuntu 16.04 LTS is also no longer supported and users are recommended to either upgrade to 18.04 LTS, or fresh install 18.04 LTS or a newer release. The team thanks it's users and the community support.

    Gustavo Silva: Disco Dingo Thoughts

    Gustavo Silva (gsilvapt) writes to give his review of Disco Dingo 19.04, remarking "One of the reasons Ubuntu is my favourite is how simple and compatible it is." Gustavo notes of 'nomodeset' as an option, the improvements to the UI and the custom GNOME experience, and the inclusion of the Linux 5.0 kernel. His conclusion is "the entire experience feels improved, sharper, more responsive than before.... Great job, everyone."

    Ubuntu Studio 16.04 LTS reaches End Of Life (EOL)

    Here a missive reminds us that Ubuntu Studio 16.04 LTS reached its EOL on April 25, 2019, thus any users still on 16.04 LTS should upgrade to 18.04 and enable the Ubuntu Studio Backports PPA to get support up to April 2021.

    Results of Debian Project Leader elections 2019

    Ana Guerrero López tells us that the Debian Project Leader elections have just finished with Sam Hartman being declared the new Project Leader starting April 21, 2019 with a term of one year.     KDE Saw More System Settings Work While EGLStreams KWin Support Stole The Show

    Michael Larabel writes that KDE now has nvidia EGLStreams support for Wayland in KWin. Michael notes there are many other fixes and improvements, inclusive of an overhaul of the SDDM settings page. A link is provided to Nate Graham's summary.

    OpenJDK 11 Now The Default Java For Ubuntu 18.04 LTS - Plus Some New OpenJDK Benchmarks

    Michael Larabel tells us Canonical have switched Java in Ubuntu 18.04 LTS from OpenJDK 10 to OpenJDK 11. OpenJDK 11 is a long-term support release so it shouldn't be that much of a surprise. Links are provided, plus some graphics showing benchmarks of various OpenJDK releases.

    Ubuntu 19.10 Daily Builds Are Now Available to Download

    Marius Nestor writes that Canonical have kicked off the Ubuntu 19.10 development cycle for early adopters and testers with daily ISO images for Ubuntu Desktop and Ubuntu Server, including flavors. Screenshots are provided, though we are reminded as it's very early it'll look and act like Ubuntu 19.04. Meanwhile, whilst we know it's release date is October 2019, we still don't know the E animal yet.

    GNOME 3.34 Desktop Environment Development Kicks Off with First Snapshot

    Marius Nestor informs us that GNOME 3.34's first development snapshot 3.33.1 has been released for public testing. Details on how to download, or build are provided with links. We are reminded GNOME 3.33 will become 3.34 when it is finally released around 11-September-2019.
