I have an older macbook, A1278. I believe it has the Mavericks OSX installed but for some reason it keeps booting into the disk utility. I bought this used so I dont know the state of the OS.
How would I be able to install Ubuntu on it using a bootable USB drive? Where would I go to download a Ubuntu OS?
I'm currently on a ubuntu machine, but I only have about 6GB space on it, so I could use this to download and transfer the install files onto a USB stick.

You need to tell us the correct model number or description first. G3 would mean iBook, not Macbook.

Ok. I was able to read the scuffed back and it says 1278 so, its a Macbook A1278. It's not iBook, its a Macbook A1278.

OK, that model number applies to about 12 different Macbook Pros from 2008 to 2013. Seems like all the 13 inch ones. You should get Ubuntu 20.04 from:
https://ubuntu.com/download/desktop
Get the iso named xxxx.xxx.amd64.iso
Make a bootable USB stick using Balena Etcher (find via web search - it's free)
plug the USB into your MacBook Pro, start it and then hold the "Option" key down until you see the boot selector.
Select the Ubuntu choice (probably says Linux) and click to start.
