So I made a serious mistake doing something I almost never do that is to use cut instead of copy while in Caja file manager to transfer files to a flash storage device from the hard drive.
Big oops, since somewhere during the transfer of the files over to flash drive it stopped being able to write to the filesystem and showed in /etc/syslog with all sorts of nasty messages involving bad sectors and whatever on the USB flash storage device. So now things seem pretty messed up since the filesystem is pretty much in the crappyiest of conditions (for the flash stick, which won’t mount). I tried fsck there, but even if it were to mount I know that at least some of the files didn't make it over (because of the aborted operation during moving/renaming or whatever it is that cut/paste actually does in the Caja file manager I was working in).
So probably not expecting any quick fix here and I guess it is a lesson about backup or redundant copies if I can't solve...not the biggest deal.
I was actually wondering though if maybe the Ubunut/Linux desktop environment or the Mate provided Caja file manager may have temporarily stored these files or kept them in case the cut and paste operation failed the way it did just now.
I don't believe I stand a prayer at using recovery software to locate the files on the usb but I will try with whatever solution I already have installed for that...no need for any suggestions about file reovery tools thanks.
