Why does whatsapp web ask for an update of chrome

I am running Chromium Version 71.0.3578.80 (Official Build) Built on Ubuntu , running on Ubuntu 16.04 (64-bit)

This morning my whatsapp web tab asked me to upgrade Chrome with the following message:

WhatsApp works with Google Chrome 36+
To use WhatsApp, update Chrome or use Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Microsoft Edge or Opera.
    UPDATE GOOGLE CHROME

Is Chromium the same as Chrome?
Should I update Chrome although I am running Chromium?
What should I do do get whatsapp web running again?

    Thanks

Chromium is the open source project that the proprietary google chrome is based on. Updates for each may occur at different times.

Try setting a user agent switcher to one of those browsers whatsapps wants as what whatsapp will see.
You can install a user agent switcher from the chrome store.
