    Post installation problems

I've just installed version 18.1 on an Acer Aspire One netbook (circa 2010) 32 bit. The installation went smoothly but when booting the computer goes to some sort of suspended state. I press the power button and it wakes up and takes me to the 'old fashioned' X log in (sorry don't remember what this is called). If I log in everything works fine but if I then choose Leave->Shutdown it once again goes to sleep. If I press the power button it wakes up and shows me the nice Lubuntu log in screen.

I've looked in desktop power settings (just in case) and nothing seems amiss and there are no relevant power settings in the BIOS.

Can anyone suggest where I start looking for a fix?

    TIA

    Paul

EDIT: If I choose shutdown from the 'proper' log-in screen it shuts down as it should.
