Trouble with installing Nvida 390 driver on Ubuntu 18.10

Ive been trying for ages now to get my system working with Nvidia driver. My desktop has a Nvidia GTX-480 graphics card and I have tried every Nvidia driver since the 304 version and have much the same problem with them all.
The last Ubuntu I have had working with a Nvidia driver is 18.04. I have read through all the posts I could find on the problem with Ubuntu 19.10 and Nvida drivers. I have tried numerous suggestions and tried the supposed fix by uncommenting the line #WaylandEnable=false in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf. I tried altering the bootloader to remove & include the nomodeset option too. I tried purging nvidia*before installing the driver and using the command "sudo nvida-xconfig after installing the driver and I seem to get to the point when I am logged in and then its doesnt progress to the graphical interface and instead gves the error and then freezes. Only a hard reset gets me out of it. If I then purge the nvidia driver its bootes up to the desktop again but only with the nouveau driver and cannot play any videos without them stuttering
I even tried removing wayland and using just lightdm but stsill no joy. Please can someone tell me what this error means and is it this that is stopping the Nvidia driver working.

You should only install the correct driver for your card.
If a newer card then any one of the newer drivers usually works, but many want the newest and use the ppa.

If older card there is only one legacy driver.
Legacy drivers by GPU model, you will see your card needs the 390.xxx driver

Do you mean 18.10 or 19.04 as there is no 19.10 till next year..

Yes sorry I meant 18.10. Ive just purged Nvidia* to get me back to a desktop I can use but I really need to get this sorted or I have to keep going back to a much older version of Ubuntu.

If it worked properly on 18.o4, then it should work on 18.10. Having said that, I rarely find that updating from one release to another does anything other than create problems that are either very difficult to fix or impossible to fix. That is why I only use the LTS releases and always do a clean install. My recommendation would be to do a clean install of 18.04 after backing up everything. If you were to do a clean install of 18.10, chances are that your Nvidia driver would work. Then again, it may not. Either way, you would be looking at another upgrade in 5 months and the possibility/ probability of having issues again.

My main working install is the latest LTS version. But I keep my last LTS installed in a separate / (root) partition. Since I have data in another partition I only need to install to /.
And then I do install the latest install, just to see differences, but again in another 25GB partition.
I used to upgrade every 6 months, but back then had issues. My first clean install worked so well, I decided never to do an upgrade again.

That makes a lot of sense and you t;hen still have a working system you can switch back to if the latest doesnt work.. I always do a clean install as I found it causes problems sometimes just upgrading so it it looks like I will have to go back to 18.04 again. The first timer I asked on here about a previous Nvidia 9800GT I was having the same problems with I was told its too old get a newer graphics card. So I did and still I have the same problem. At one time they used to say Linux was great for keeping your old harware useable but it seems thats not so anymore. Would switching to say Debian itself be better that the quicker evolving Ubuntu?

I would think your 9800 should work as long as you only have the 340.xx driver. The issue is those that are so old they need the very old 304 driver.

Issues with nVidia are often where users install incorrect driver then try to install another driver. They then conflict. Drivers do not un-install previous drivers, so you purge driver and perhaps some settings to make sure you only have to correct driver.

But I have a newer 620 card and it works just as well with the open source nouveau driver.

Well I had to eventually give up on that install as it became impossible tio use it. So I have now done a new install of Ubuntu 18.10 and I have done all updates so I am now at the point I would normally install the Nvidia driver. My next move at this point would be to open a terminal and purge everything nvida* before installing the Nvidia 390 driver. If I do this now it would boot up to the point it loggs me in but will not prgress to a grahical display. As I said eariler un-comenting the line to disable Waylamd in the /etc/gdm3/custom.conf as suggeted doesn't make any differnce. Can someone advise what I do from this point with a clean up to date installation to get the Nvidia 390 driver installed & working with a graphical display.
