Ubuntu vs. Kubuntu - Game Performance

Was excited to do a fresh install of Ubuntu 18.10, and got it all loaded up with my favorite software. Along with Steam and Proton, I could start playing some of my favorite games. I noticed that the game didn't perform as well as it does in Windows (The Witcher 1). Well, I chalked this up to being played on Linux, which is a common thing with windows games.

But then I decided to load up Kubuntu, to give it a test whirl... and the performance difference was very noticeable. Even just the DE seems snappier and faster.

Well, the game performance was significantly better in Kubuntu as well. I couldn't tell any performance differences between Kubuntu and Windows.

Any ideas why Ubuntu would be slower than Kubuntu? Isn't KDE more resource intensive than Gnome3?

Not sure which one uses more resources, but they are both rather heavy when compared to something like Xubuntu or Lubuntu. What are the resources you available? Some specs on your machine may help. Are you playing that game through WINE?

I have an i7-3440, GTX780ti (390 drivers), 16g Ram, and just using Proton built into Steam.

What, if any, driver did you install for the Nvidia card and where did you get it from?

I installed the 390 drivers provided via the driver update utility in Ubuntu/Kubuntu

Absolutely not. The latest Plasma 5 is very lean & snappy. I gave up on Gnome 3 as the graphics performance of Plasma is way better. The only Gnome 3 DE that I can get to perform reasonably well is Budgie. But for me KDE is streets ahead of Gnome, in performance.
