Question Ubuntu 18.04 - Screen Pixelated Horizontal Lines after Login Screen

I have a display issue with Ubuntu 18.04.

After login, before the desktop is displayed the screen goes wonky and shows horizontal lines across the screen.

The only way I've found to resolve this was to completely shutdown and reboot - sometimes this works, but sometimes not.

The display looks fine at the login screen.

The monitor is using motherboard VGA. I do have an Nvidia 1080ti installed for use with machine learning. I'm not sure if the Nvidia card is somehow causing issues, or if I have a motherboard issue. I've tried two different VGA cords to the monitor.

    Any suggestions?
If I had another workaround to try without having to try rebooting I would consider that a manageable solution.

May we ask why you are not using the Nvidia card? Did you install any driver for the Nvidia card? Was there a driver for the Nvidia cartd installed automatically when you installed the OS? Have you tried hooking the monitor to the Nvidia card and see what you get?
