Buying a new laptop (United Kingdom)

    Hi,

I'm looking to purchase a new laptop to run Ubuntu on and am after some advice from any UK readers (I'm asking for UK so I can make sure the models are available to me) who have recently purchased a new laptop and have wiped Windows and successfully installed Linux without having to go through loads of hoops. Having had a recent Dell XPS 15 and spent ages trying to get Linux working I'm not ready to try that again. My machines like the HP X360 seem to have issues with drivers and the touch screens.

I would rather stick to a main consumer brand if possible and my needs are as follows:

    15.6" or 17" screen
AMD Ryzen if possible (Though will consider Intel)
    8GB RAM or more
    SSD Drive
    Good bright display
    Full HD

    Under £1000 GBP

I don't generally play games but want the ability to play full screen HD video.

    Many thanks

    Hello Jonesyp,
I'm not in the U.K. but this vendor may be of interest to you: https://www.entroware.com/store/aether
Also Dell U.K. has several models found here: https://www.dell.com/learn/uk/en/ukb...inux-ubuntu-en
    good Luck with your search.

have a look on this page: https://linuxpreloaded.com/

i think Entroware might be a good option for you.

the dell link above gave me laptops 4th gen intel and ubutnu 12.04 on them...

also "main consumer brand" will be windows oriented. but if you must go with that, then search for business laptops which often come linux preinstalled in some countries or on request. which means they will be fully compatible with linux. however mostly they will be intel based and often they are not the latest&greatest. when you focus on such a type of laptop then even HP will work (they have some models that are SUSE preloaded & Ubuntu works out of the box on them).
Read the easy to understand, lots of pics Ubuntu manual.
Do i need antivirus/firewall in linux?
