For taskbar / window list, try tint2 from official repositories. It's simple and does not get in the way.

The taskbar extension is now dropped from Disco archive

Yeah the gnome team is followng a strange way over time: gnome2 was well tuned, then gnome3 was built from scratch, without a gnome2 transition, giving a very basic's DE features. And taskbar can't be fixed due to lack of gnome documentation.
If they do an inbuilt taskbar equivalent, then its ok, i can wait a bit, otherwise shame on them.

Taskbar is going away? Huge bummer! That's what makes Gnome usable IMO. I'm afraid of what the Gnome 3 team's idea of a taskbar equivalent might look like.
