18.10: missing indicator/tray icons (Steam, Chrome, Dropbox, etc)

On my installation of Ubuntu 18.10 Beta all the indicator icons from Chrome, Dropbox, Ulauncher, InSync and Steam are missing.
These are the indicator currently installed:

And these are the Gnome extensions installed:

Looking Glass shows no error for the gnome-shell-extension-appindicator:

Is this a bug or an expected behavior? Is there any way to get them back?

Try either TopIcons Plus or Unite extension. Please take the time to read about each to decide which will work for you.
This the best I myself can offer I am not a TopIcons-Plus user myself and not a Gnome user anymore.

Moreover, the Gnome project is pushing towards dropping status icons and any kind of legacy tray, making the project useless on the long term and difficult to maintain due to bugs or lack of features that are out of its scope.

For the Topicons with 3.30 read a possible fix by user "0x3ax" On the Topicons link I posted.

    fix 3.30 ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/TopIcons@phocean.net/extension.js:181 replace: -tray.manage_screen(global.screen, Main.panel.actor); +tray.manage_screen(Main.panel.actor);
Let us know how it works out.

Re: 18.10: missing indicator/tray icons (Steam, Chrome, Dropbox, etc)

Hi 1fallen, thank you for your answer. Unfortunately TopIcons-Plus is not working for me, even after applying the fix for Gnome 3.30. In any case I would like to focus on fixing the issue with gnome-shell-extension-appindicator.

On Launchpad another user just marked himself as affected by it.

I was hoping to find here more people testing the Beta of 18.10 so that I could get additional confirmation of this issue and, maybe, a fix/workaround for it.

Thanks for your effort on TopIcons >>> helpful information for others.
I do test 18.10 (For ten years now) just not Gnome, I have no active interest.

If you still have some extensions installed from the url, then purge them all, and only install the desired extension(s) from the archive.

nb: topicon works well here on a gnome-shell on xorg session.

Re: 18.10: missing indicator/tray icons (Steam, Chrome, Dropbox, etc)

Hi dino99, thank you for your suggestion, I will try it later on a brand new user account so to not have any user settings/extensions influence.

If you are on 18.10 could you please try if you have the same issue using gnome-shell-extension-appindicator instead of TopIcons-Plus?

And if you have, could you please mark yourself as affected here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...r/+bug/1795121

I this system at least the Dropbox and Steam indicators work OK. I'm not using the Chrome, Ulauncher and InSynchave indicators.

Hi P-I H, this is interesting, could you please post the output of this command?

    Code:
$ apt list --installed | grep indicator
It will show all the installed packages with the word "indicator" inside the name.

This is on another computer with Nvidia graphics, installed yesterday. The indicators works OK on this one too.

It looks a little bit different on the first system, which has been running Cosmic for months.
