Hey thank you! That has been very helpful! I use a post-installation script for Ubuntu that installs several packages. This script installed "unity-tweak-tool" and "indicator-multiload" that have as dependency several Unity packages and indicators. After I removed those two packages, all the unused dependencies and a relogin, the indicator icons came back. Thanks a lot for the help.
JD82's comment - about using a post-installation script for Ubuntu - does not apply in my case, nor for most people, I suspect. Appindicators still do not work for a number of applications - in my case Uget and HPLIP - so the problem has definitely not been solved. I never installed unity-tweak-tool nor indicator-multiload nor any Unity packages, so there is nothing (to my knowledge) to remove.
