    Cosmic Cuttlefish (to be 18.10) feature freeze

    Steve Langasek announces, as in accordance with the release schedule, that Cosmic Cuttlefish is now in Feature Freeze. No new features or unrelated changes are to be unilaterally accepted as the focus is now on bug fixing. Links are provided, however, for the process to obtain exceptions. Steve advises that the load is heavy and gives direction on the means to help alleviate the transition of packages within cosmic-proposed.

    Ubuntu Membership Board call for nominations

    Simon Quigley announces the term expiration of five members that opens this call for restaffing. Qualifications and the nomination process are given with the nomination period to end Monday, September 10th, at 13:00 UTC. The Community Council will then make the final decision and announcement.

    Static Display Configuration for Mir

    Alan Griffiths (alan_g) relates the means, via a YAML file, to explicitly set the arrangement. The feature is currently only available with miral-shell but work is in progress to implement it for miral-kiosk as well.

He notes the work from UBports, creation of egmde Snap channels, bug fixing in the VT switching and logind interactions, work done on a display configuration file format, that William Wold (wmww) continues to focus on xdg-shell stable, and tutorials have been updated.

    Carlos Sorioano tells us that he and Felipe Borges recently went to Akademy, and what it was like for two GNOME devs to be at a KDE conference. Carlos lists what he believes KDE and Akademy do better than the GNOME project, and then some things he believes GNOME does better.     GIMP 2.10.6 Released with Vertical Text Support + More

    Joey Sneddon reports on the last scheduled update in the 2.10.x stable release series. He notes and provides screenshots of the improvements, new filters, bug fixes, and other changes in this release. Joey advises of the three methods to install: Flatpak, Gimp PPA, and the older version in Snap packaging.

    Valve Rolls Out Wine-based "Proton" For Running Windows Games On Linux

    Michael Larabel reports on Valve's release of a new Steam Play version. Under the new Wine-based Proton project, Windows games can now be installed and run directly from the Linux Steam client, while running with Vulkan support. Michael links to the announcement and lists key improvements as well as a number of games that are fully supported.

    Ubuntu 18.10 Daily Builds Ship with New Default Theme

    Joey Sneddon reports that the Yaru GTK and the Suru icon themes are now part of the Ubuntu 18.10 daily image and set as the defaults. He explains the base elements that update the look and feel of the Ubuntu desktop. Joey links to the daily build for 18.10 and notes that the new theme is also available for 18.04 via the Snap store.

    NVIDIA 396.54 Linux Driver Offers Big Performance Boost For Frequent Gamers

    Michael Larabel advises on a significant driver update for Linux gamers that fixes an old resource leak that could lead to lower performance. Providing the benchmark test results, Michael is surprised at the performance boost.

    Desktop Icons For The GNOME Shell Are Back With Beta Extension

    Michael Larabel reminds us that GNOME Shell dropped desktop icons, a much beloved and missed feature, which has now sort of returned thanks to Red Hat developer Carlos Soriano. With the intention of restoring the icons for use in the "classic" mode, including the ability to open, execute, cut/copy and open in terminal. It requires GNOME Shell 3.28 and the latest daily builds. More details can found in Carlos’ blog post.

    Mesa 18.2-RC4 Released Due To Open Graphics Driver Bugs

    Michael Larabel writes that the fourth RC of Mesa 18.2 was released today, as there are still blocker bugs preventing the final release. The milestone contains many fixes with the final release now expected next week, providing details on the bugs and a link to the mailing list.

    After Adopting LXQt, Lubuntu Is Switching to Wayland by Default for Ubuntu 20.10

    Marius Nestor relates that Lubuntu plans to move to the more secure and capable Wayland in Lubuntu 20.10. He tells us of the reasons for the move according to Lubuntu developer Simon Quigley. Marius reminds us that the first release of the distribution with LXQt is due on October 18, 2018.

    Ubuntu/Debian Add LZ4-Compressed Initramfs Support, Will Auto Decide LZ4/XZ Choice

    Michael Larabel reminds of discussions back in March on Ubuntu 18.10 using LZ4-compressed kernel images (initramfs) before telling us it's now here on the latest Ubuntu and Debian packages. He tells us of LZ4 providing faster decompression than the old Gzip/XZ method but producing larger files, which is why Ubuntu will use an automatic determination on which compression to use.
