    Resurrecting My Old Panp7

I have a Pangolin Laptop that had gotten kind of old and at some point the display just stopped turning on. At the time I was too busy to tinker with it and it literally went in a closet and didn't get touched for a very long time. I just moved and just for giggles, because I found it while moving, I decided to plug it in and see if it would power up. It did for a short period of time and then the display just gets these large boxes/lines all down the screen and locks up (which is better than the nothing that used to appear on the screen). I managed to get into recovery mode, reset my password (which I had forgotten) and lower the display resolution. It seems like since I did that it's staying on more consistently. Just off of the top of my head I would guess there's something wrong with the video card. Does anyone know if this is replaceable? I believe this has an old AMD video card in it which is probably going to have issues as soon as it starts trying to run the zillion updates it hasn't had a chance to run since it's been powered down for a couple years.

    Unlikely.

First let's see the hardware details. Please run
    Code:
    sudo lshw -sanitize > lshw.txt
and post lshw.txt in CODE tags.

Don't use this space for a list of your hardware. It only creates false hits in the search engines.

Yes, I see what you mean by an old install. The hardware looks strong, though.

Before suspecting hardware errors I suggest that you try a fresh install of 18.04.1, not an in-place upgrade, for example Xubuntu if speed is a priority.

Cool, I'll give it a try. Not going to struggle to find drivers for the AMD video card? I did find an answer to the question of whether I can replace that and it is no in case anyone else is looking. Looks like it's soldered to the motherboard.

Correct. There is only one set of drivers for your graphics processor and it's the open source Radeon driver which will be installed by default.

AMD has come a long way providing good open source drivers and even if other drivers were available I would normally not consider switching.

    Re: Resurrecting My Old Panp7

Went to do this and had trouble with the version of Ubuntu I had on my thumb drive. I'm fairly certain is more the program I used to set it up but I went to System76's site and downloaded Etcher and since I got that as a suggestion from them I installed PopOS too and it seems to have resolved the issues. I'm sure if I'd gone with just a regular install of Ubuntu it would have done the same thing but since that's working I guess I'll stick with it for now. Thanks for the help. Thought I had tried that but it's been a while so maybe not.
