    Alan Pope (popey) announces that, to make the Ubuntu Discourse instance consistent with other projects, it is now available at the address “discourse.ubuntu.com” (again).

    This Week In Mir (6th July, 2018)

    Alan Griffiths (alan_g) gives the post-release update, telling us that the mir-kiosk Snap has been updated and promoted to stable, Chris Halse Rogers (roaf) has fixed the bug for releasing to 18.10, and Alan himself got an example EGL code working on Wayland. Going forward, the team is converting some of its mir-kiosk applications from the legacy mirclient API to Wayland, and thinking about supporting Wayland extensions on Mir.

    The Planet

    Xubuntu Development Update July 2018

    Sean Davis updates us on the work done by the Xubuntu team, including a brief preview of Xfce 4.13 which can be seen in 18.10, thanks to the hard of Unit 193. Progress continues moving from GTK+ 2 to 3, but it’s not readily visible as the team have done their job well. Sean also gives an outlook to the Catfish 1.4.6 and Xubuntu 18.04.1 releases.

    Declaring the Commencement of the Ubuntu Free Culture Showcase for 18.10

    Nathan Haines opens the call to submit creations for the wallpapers to be included in the October release of Ubuntu 18.10. The contest ends August 13th and Nathan provides base requirements and links to the details.

    Michael Hall: Joining the Linux Foundation

    In advising his joining the Linux Foundation, Michael gives us a resume of his work up to and through the Ubuntu Community Team to his role as developer advocate and community manager for the EdgeX Foundry. Expressly stated this experience will further the merging of IoT and common technology within the open source community.

    This Week in Lubuntu Development #6

    Simon Quigley reminds us Lubuntu 17.10 reaches EOL on July 19, 2018, providing a link to a video made when 17.04 reached EOL as aid for those that need to upgrade. He then highlights some of the work done by the Lubuntu team, including the availability of nm-tray 0.4.0 and LXQt 0.13.0 in Cosmic, and Calamares installer fixes. Simon also updates us on the use of Phabricator and an IRC bot providing notifications on it. Finally he gives a summary on SouthEast LinuxFest which he took part in recently, and links to photos of the event.

    Xubuntu 18.10 Is Landing More Xfce 4.13 Components

    Michael Larabel gives a status update on the path to Xubuntu 18.10, and notes some changes in Xfce 4.13 as progress is made towards the release of Xfce 4.14 hoped for next year. He lists the applications that are affected in the move from GTK+ 2 to 3.

    Red Hat Making Progress On KDE/GNOME Wayland Screen-Sharing With WebRTC

    Michael Larabel tells us that Jan Grulich and other Red Hat developers have been making progress on screen-sharing support using WebRTC under Wayland for GNOME Shell and KDE Plasma. He links to Grulich's blog which provides more information.

    Mir Developers Ponder Their Approach For Supporting More Wayland Extensions

    Dell Precision 7530/7730 Now Shipping With Ubuntu Linux Option

    Michael Larabel reports that the Dell Precision laptops 7530 and 7730 are now shipping with Ubuntu 16.04 LTS as a factory option as announced back in May. He provides some specs and prices, including what is saved over the Windows 10 models.

    ‘Next Gen’ Kdenlive Is Almost Here — But It Needs Your Help

    Joey Sneddon tells us of the new beta Kdenlive video editor available for download. Quoting the developers announcement, it contains 1.5 years of work and is planned to be part of the KDE 18.08 Applications release. As it contains a lot of refactoring, a bug squashing day is being considered and testing of it is encouraged.

    LibreOffice 6.1 Release Candidate Available Now for Final Bug Hunting Session

    Marius Nestor writes of the bug hunting sessions on the roadmap to the expected mid-August 2018 release. Marius links to the various aids for those choosing to participate and a download to the first Release Candidate version.

    Canonical Outs Major Kernel Security Updates for All Supported Ubuntu Linux OSes

    Marius Nestor advises that kernel updates are now available to address 22 security vulnerabilities discovered across all supported Ubuntu releases. He provides details on the various issues and reminds us to update as soon as possible.

    GIMP 2.10.4 Released with Faster Start Up Times, Auto-Straighten Tool

    Joey Sneddon informs us of a new release of GIMP 2.10.4, which includes asynchronous font loading that reduces load time. Other big changes include font tagging and a new auto-straighten option. Joey links to the release announcement for more details.

    Canonical Fixes Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Regression Causing Boot Failures on AMD PCs

    Marius Nestor reports on side effects of the Spectre microprocessor side-channel vulnerability patch that caused some 14.04 systems to fail to boot. The July 20 patch requires a reversion for the 14.04 releases that is provided in the July 5 reversion.

    SUSE Linux Sold in $2.5 Billion Deal

    Joey Sneddon tells us that SUSE has been sold to EQT Partners, a Swedish private equity firm, in a deal expected to close early next year. This is said to see the open-source company return to operate as an independent business, and no impact expected for the distribution.

    Eric Brown writes about the rugged FM10A VMC touch panel computer designed for forklifts that runs on Android 6.0 or Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. He notes it feels like Winmate is giving Linux a tryout in its June 29 announcement.
