I have submitted a bug report on this, but some Brother MFC (MFC-9440CN, for example) will not scan after PC is upgraded from 16.04 to 18.04. MFC-9440CN and connection to PC okay as machine is dual boot and scanner works from Win side.

I am having the same problem with my Brother MFC-7460DN.
I have tried reinstalling the drivers - that doews not work as well.
Anyone have any solutions?
Found a solution from another post:
https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread....rother+scanner
The problem turns out to be similar to Brother printers; the install routine places files in /usr/lib64 when they should be in /usr/lib. The solution is different for 64 bit and 32 bit users.
