Headphone no sound ubuntu 16.04

I have recently installed ubuntu 16.04 to my toshiba satellite pro.

The sound works through the speakers but although the headphone jack is recognized as plugged in, there is no sound through headphones.

I have checked that the headphone channel is not muted.

Any ideas?

I'm having poor sound quality with headphones on 18.04. I'll start a thread if I can't find one.
