    Status of Ubuntu Mesa backports

    Timo Aaltonen reports that in order to backport Mesa 18.0.5 to Ubuntu 16.04, it first has to get to Ubuntu 18.04, so that upgrades from the first release to the latter will be smooth once Mesa 18.0.5 is released to 16.04 - which is already in process. Additionally, Mesa 18.1.1 is available for 18.04 via the X-Updates PPA.

    Canonical Outs New Kernel Security Updates for All Supported Ubuntu Releases

    Marius Nestor informs us that Canonical has released kernel updates for all supported versions of Ubuntu that fixes many flaws. He provides details and links to the relevant CVE notices. All users are advised to update, with a short note on new HWE kernels for 16.04.5 LTS, 14.04.5 LTS, and 12.04 ESM.

    KDE Plasma 5.13 Officially Released with Revamped Lock & Login Screens, Settings

    Marius Nestor notifies us that KDE Plasma 5.13 has been released, including revamped lock and login screens and redesigned system settings, optimizing startup and minimizing memory usage. Also included are improvements to the KWin window manager, a preview of GTK+ Global Menu integration, and other changes and additions. Screenshots and a video on the release are provided.

    Mesa 18.0.5 Being Prepped For Ubuntu 18.04 While 18.1.1 Going Into X-Updates

    Michael Larabel advises that Ubuntu 18.04 will remain on the Mesa 18.0 series for now, currently being updated to 18.0.5. However, when Ubuntu 18.04.2 pulls in the 18.10 hardware enablement stack, an upgrade to Mesa 18.2 is expected. Meanwhile Mesa 18.1.1 has been made available for Ubuntu 18.04 in the X-Updates PPA.

    The NVIDIA vs. Open-Source Nouveau Linux Driver Benchmarks For Summer 2018

    Michael Larabel reports on the progress of the open-source and proprietary NVIDIA graphic drivers and the deficiencies encountered in the first one. In his testing on several cards, for gaming the proprietary driver clearly has the greater performance.

    Mir 0.32 Is Inching Close To Release With Many Improvements

    Michael Larabel writes that Mir 0.32 is closing in on release, most notably improving Wayland support, as well as adding Logind support so Unity 8 can be run from the GDM3 display manager. He provides further details and links to the full changelog so far.
