No sound or video playback at all (Ubuntu 16.04)

I installed Ubuntu 18.04 but had problems with it so I downgraded and installed Ubuntu 16.04 as my operating system. I tried YouTube videos with Firefox and Google Chrome but either it's an error or the video is really choppy with no sound. I tried incognito mode and disabling my ad-blocker. I tried downloading the video but in the media player the video is just frozen. I downloaded Spotify and started my playlist, but no music came out and the song time stamp freezes every time I press play and jumps to the time it should be when I press pause, etc: playing for 10 sec and pause, the time of the song jumps to 10 seconds, no music)

There is no sound and I cannot play any video. Yet, on YouTube, the little previews of videos when you hover your mouse over the video thumbnail does seem to load good. Also animations full screen animations on websites (like a mini video with no pause button) seem to load good. Also I can play games on the web, all that I tried work just fine.

    Edit: Headphones don't work either.
