    Ubuntu won't boot. What should I do next?????

    Hi

    I have a dual boot Windows/ Ubuntu desktop.
    I have windows and Ubuntu installed on separate SSD.
    I have a 3TB HD for data, a 3TB HD for windows applications and a 3TB HD used only for backup of data.
    All Ubuntu data is stored on the SSD.

    Ubuntu won't boot into the latest version of the Kernel. It seems to be a problem with sdb2 (The Ubuntu SSD).
    It won't boot normally or into recovery. I suspect that maybe the SSD has failed.

    I can boot into an earlier version of Ubuntu listed on the Grub menu, and I can reach the desktop.

    At first I thought it might be a problem with fstab:

    Code:
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information.
    #
    # Use 'blkid' to print the universally unique identifier for a
    # device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name devices
    # that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).
    #
    # <file system> <mount point>   <type>  <options>       <dump>  <pass>
    # / was on /dev/sda2 during installation
    UUID=9c4f98f6-a022-4152-beb7-10c52dcb2145 /               ext4    errors=remount-ro 0       1

    # /boot/efi was on /dev/nvme0n1p2 during installation
    UUID=18AC-B2FA  /boot/efi       vfat    umask=0077      0       1

    # /home was on /dev/sda4 during installation
    UUID=e6142855-720d-4637-9bb7-f133a15a18c7 /home           ext4    defaults        0       2

    # swap was on /dev/sda3 during installation
    UUID=65836970-b054-4a03-8567-c794a1a6fb98 none            swap    sw              0       0

    proc            /proc           proc    defaults          0       0
    #/dev/mmcblk0p1  /boot           vfat    defaults          0       2
    #/dev/mmcblk0p2  /               ext4    defaults,noatime  0       1
    I had a USB stick with a Raspbian installation. Raspian has
    Code:
    /dev/mmcblk0p1
    and
    Code:
    /dev/mmcblk0p2
    partitions but I don't think Ubuntu has these.
    I commented these lines out and uncommented the "during installation" lines.

    This modified fstab seems to work with the older kernel version but not the latest on the grub menu.

    The mount command looks like:
    Code:
    sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime)
    proc on /proc type proc (rw,relatime)
    udev on /dev type devtmpfs (rw,nosuid,relatime,size=8097036k,nr_inodes=2024259,mode=755)

    Re: Ubuntu won't boot. What should I do next?????

    It shows your UEFI boot on the Windows ESP - efi system partition, the NVMe drive.
    Did you create an ESP on the Ubuntu drive, even if not immediately used, I create one on every drive. And have an Ubuntu install on every drive, if only a smaller partition for emergency boot.

    May be best to see details, you can run from your Ubuntu live installer or any working install, use ppa version not older Boot-Repair ISO:
    Post the link to the Create BootInfo summary report. Is part of Boot-Repair:
    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Info and:
    https://sourceforge.net/p/boot-repair/home/Home/

    But Boot-Repair uses bootinfoscript for part of report and that has not been updated for NVMe drives nor MMC cards.

    Re: Ubuntu won't boot. What should I do next?????

    Hi
    I had to Google ESP to find out what it is. It's been a long time since I did the installation but I would have installed with the default Ubuntu settings. If that includes an ESP on the Ubuntu drive, it would be there.

    I get an error message that is:
    Code:
    VFS: Cannot open root device "sdb2" or unknown-block(0,0): error -6
    Pleast append a correct "root=" boot option; here are the available partitions:
    Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

    Re: Ubuntu won't boot. What should I do next?????

    Your fstab says the drive was sda, but now the errors are from trying to mount partitions on sdb?
    UUID should work even if you moved drives around.
    But did you add a drive, or change which SATA port it was plugged into.

    If you go to the link in my signature and at bottom are Acronyms: and often link to further info.

    For all drives post this:
    lsblk -o +PARTUUID /dev/sda
    And this:
    sudo blkid -c /dev/null -o list

    Re: Ubuntu won't boot. What should I do next?????

    Hi
    Thanks for the advice.
    I haven't changed the drive configuration since installation.
    I did accidentally have a bootable Raspian drive in when I booted.
    I suspect that drive or grub have updated fstab that is now causing me problems.

    I won't be able to provide the outputs you have asked for until next week.

    Hi
    I am writing this using an earlier version of Ubuntu. It is working perfectly.

    fstab looks like:
    Code:
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information.
    #
    # Use 'blkid' to print the universally unique identifier for a
    # device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name devices

    I guess this is probably not too much help because it doesn't give information on the boot version of Ubuntu.
    I will take a look at the boot tool you posted info on.

    lsblk -o +PARTUUID /dev/sda

    Re: Ubuntu won't boot. What should I do next?????

    Post #1 shows this:
    UUID=9c4f98f6-a022-4152-beb7-10c52dcb2145 / ext4 errors=remount-ro 0 1

    But that UUID is not shown in your posts above. Do you have another drive?
    UUIDs do not normally change unless you totally reinstalled & reformatted a partition.

    The only thing I have done is edit fstab.

    =================== Suggested repair
    The default repair of the Boot-Repair utility would reinstall the grub-efi-amd64-signed of sdb2, using the following options: sdb1/boot/efi,
    Additional repair would be performed: unhide-bootmenu-10s fix-windows-boot use-standard-efi-file

    =================== Final advice in case of suggested repair
    Please do not forget to make your BIOS boot on sdb1/efi/.../grub*.efi file!

    If your computer reboots directly into Windows, try to change the boot order in your BIOS.
    If your BIOS does not allow to change the boot order, change the default boot entry of the Windows bootloader.
    For example you can boot into Windows, then type the following command in an admin command prompt:
    bcdedit /set {bootmgr} path \EFI\...\grub*.efi

    =================== User settings
    The settings chosen by the user will not act on the boot.

    Re: Ubuntu won't boot. What should I do next?????

    Sorry, mixed up UUID and PartUUID. The PARTUUID is the GUID with gpt partitioned drives.
    So this is correct.
    UUID=9c4f98f6-a022-4152-beb7-10c52dcb2145 / ext4 errors=remount-ro 0 1

    The first part of the Boot-Repair summary report is bootinfoscript.
    I filed a request to have bootinfoscript include more info on NVMe drives, but he needs someone to test it as neither of us has NVMe drive.
    Support NVMe and MMC devices
    https://github.com/arvidjaar/bootinfoscript/issues

    If you go into Disks (Gnome Disks) and in upper right corner icon is Smart Status. Does it show your drive as good/passed. All I know is good or bad, but it can run many detailed tests and report those details.
