    Ununtu 18.0.4 can't find scanner

The Ubuntu Wiki Page seems to fit my situation, but a crucial piece of information is missing.

I have the epson2 backend enabled (my scanner is "Epson Perfection V300 photo" which is supported.

When I run the sane-find-scanner command though, I get this:
    Code:
    $ sane-find-scanner

      # sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
      # result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
      # scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.

      # No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
      # you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.

      # No USB scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
      # you have loaded a kernel driver for your USB host controller and have setup
      # the USB system correctly. See man sane-usb for details.

      # Not checking for parallel port scanners.

      # Most Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports
      # can't be detected by this program.

      # You may want to run this program as root to find all devices. Once you
      # found the scanner devices, be sure to adjust access permissions as
      # necessary.
Note the last paragraph: running sane-find-scanner as root, does indeed find the scanner.

    Code:
    $ sudo sane-find-scanner
    [sudo] password for scohen:

      # sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
      # result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
      # scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.

      # No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
      # you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.

found USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8 [EPSON], product=0x0131 [EPSON Scanner]) at libusb:003:015
    ...
So it's apparently a permissions issue. However it's not clear to me what to do to resolve that permissions issue. Can someone tell me?

Re: Ununtu 18.0.4 can't find scanner

First of all, I asked this same question five years ago, on Ubuntu 13.04. D'Oh! But the answer is different now. It seems to be a question of repositories.

I acquired the proprietary drivers and installed them through a script. I did not notice that the installation did not succeed. The following error messages occurred:

    Code:
W: Skipping acquire of configured file 'multiverse/binary-amd64/Packages' as repository 'http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu bionic InRelease' doesn't have the component 'multiverse' (component misspelt in sources.list?)
W: Skipping acquire of configured file 'multiverse/binary-i386/Packages' as repository 'http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu bionic InRelease' doesn't have the component 'multiverse' (component misspelt in sources.list?)
W: Skipping acquire of configured file 'multiverse/i18n/Translation-en' as repository 'http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu bionic InRelease' doesn't have the component 'multiverse' (component misspelt in sources.list?)
W: Skipping acquire of configured file 'multiverse/i18n/Translation-en_US' as repository 'http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu bionic InRelease' doesn't have the component 'multiverse' (component misspelt in sources.list?)
W: Skipping acquire of configured file 'multiverse/dep11/Components-amd64.yml' as repository 'http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu bionic InRelease' doesn't have the component 'multiverse' (component misspelt in sources.list?)
W: Skipping acquire of configured file 'multiverse/dep11/icons-48x48.tar' as repository 'http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu bionic InRelease' doesn't have the component 'multiverse' (component misspelt in sources.list?)
W: Skipping acquire of configured file 'multiverse/dep11/icons-64x64.tar' as repository 'http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu bionic InRelease' doesn't have the component 'multiverse' (component misspelt in sources.list?)
W: Skipping acquire of configured file 'multiverse/cnf/Commands-amd64' as repository 'http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu bionic InRelease' doesn't have the component 'multiverse' (component misspelt in sources.list?)
I'm not sure what to do about this. There are several sources on the Net telling you how to set up your repositories in 18.04, for example this one. However, the suggestions made there don't seem to work for me. This page tells me to go to the "Other Software" tab and click the "Canonical Partners" checkbox:

But my screen looks different from this and in any event I can't click on the Canonical Partners checkbox.
    Screenshot from 2018-06-05 16-18-12.png
When I try to click it, the window goes faint and nothing happens. It seems like this might be a bug in the Software application itself.

Is there perhaps a way to enable this repository on the command line? And if I do that would it resolve the errors above?

Try running Simple Scan from a terminal as root: sudo simple-scan

Worked for me with my V370 scanner.

Re: Ununtu 18.0.4 can't find scanner

hi! same here. trying tough to get my V550 working. clean install of 18.04

    sane-find-scanner gets access denied
    sudo sane-find-scanner shows
    Code:
    found USB scanner (vendor=0x138a, product=0x0097) at libusb:001:002
found USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8 [EPSON], product=0x013b [EPSON Scanner]) at libusb:001:010
sudo scanimage -L shows "No scanners were identified"

    my scanner uses epkowa backend
    /etc/sane.d/epkowa.conf:
    Code:
    usb 0x04b8 0x013b
    i have disabled conflicting epson && epson2 in dll.conf
    Code:
    #epson
    #epson2
anyone know a way to test that the backend is linked correctly? the install script from epson created '/etc/sane.d/dll.d/iscan' which reads simply
    Code:
    # iscan -- enables the SANE backend(s) required
    # Any changes to this file will be lost when upgrading iscan.

    epkowa
all looks to be in the right place. hoping usb/scanner permission might improve my situation. also want to verify that the epkowa backend is being seen and linked by sane. any expertise is appreciated

Re: Ununtu 18.0.4 can't find scanner

I have the same problem with an Epson Perfection v600 Photo scanner.
    Code:
     sane-find-scanner

      # sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
      # result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
      # scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.

      # No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
      # you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.

could not open USB device 0x1d6b/0x0003 at 008:001: Access denied (insufficient permissions)
    sane-find-scanner gets access denied
    sudo sane-find-scanner shows

    Code:
     sudo sane-find-scanner
    [sudo] password for rich:

      # sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
      # result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
      # scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.

found USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8 [EPSON], product=0x013a [EPSON Scanner]) at libusb:003:016
Again it seems to be an issue with access permissions to USB ports or devices. Hoping someone has a way to set USB permissions. I have been working on this for days now.

Re: Ununtu 18.0.4 can't find scanner

ubuntu manpage on sane-usb looks helpful, tho i haven't fully deciphered,
sane-find-scanner doesn't list your scanner? Does it work as root? If yes, there is a permission issue. See the LIBUSB section for details.

Re: Ununtu 18.0.4 can't find scanner

I found a way that works for me.

    1) Update sources:
    sudo apt-get update

    2) Install:libsane 1 (with synaptic)

    3) Copy libsane-epkowa files to x86-64 libs:
    sudo cp /usr/lib/sane/libsane-epkowa.* /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/sane/

    4) Install your scanner driver (http://download.ebz.epson.net/dsc/se...search/?OSC=LX)

    5) Edit /etc/udev/rules.d/79-udev-epson.rules:
    sudo nano /etc/udev/rules.d/79-udev-epson.rules

    Add:
    # chmod device EPSON group
    ATTRS{manufacturer}=="EPSON", DRIVERS=="usb", SUBSYSTEMS=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="04b8", ATTRS{idProduct}=="*", MODE="0777"

    6) Reboot

Now I can check that sane-find-scanner it is work.

    $ sane-find-scanner

    # sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
    # result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
    # scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.
