Running Paint Shop Pro 8 Crashes in newer (3.0+) versions of Wine!

Wine 3.01 is Broken meaning that Paint Shop Pro 8 crashes when starting it after installation. This thread is moved from a previous thread that started on a wrong note.

I am working to update to Ubuntu 18.04LTS, but I have some problems running my favorite Paint Program Paint Shop Pro 8 which I have owned and used for some 10 years now:

PSP8 CD files installs both the Paint Shop Pro 8 and the Animation Shop 3.

The Animation Shop runs like it used to with the exception that a small dialog saying:

Electronic registration Register.exe program not
found. You may need to reinstall the product.

After clicking OK in this dialog Animation Shop 3 runs as normal, and the dialog will not reappear when starting Animation Shop 3 again.

But Paint Shop Pro 8 has real show stopping problems, it crashes during start up:

• It shows the Splash loading DLLs
• It shows the main window behind the splash
• When the Splash reads Initializing Color Swatches, it Crashes as described above!

I have even succeeded in updating Paint Shop Pro 8.0 to 8.10 calling wine psp810enp.exe in a terminal, this it not straight forward as a preparation you have to:

• cd to the installation directory of Paint Shop Pro (/home/username/.wine/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Jasc Software Inc)
• call 'chmod -R 777 .', to give read/write/execute to all file in the folder, because the installed tries to overwrite dlls and script when updating and will fail if they are write protected

I learned this the hard way, but now I know. It was my tiny tiny hope that this wuold be an ailment for bug, but no. But at least I can now update on my main machine to 8.10...

I have filed this bug in WineHQ through their Bugzilla, BUT ANY suggestions are welcome.

It worked in wine-1.6.2 on 16.04LTS, but on 18.04LTS which installs wine-3.0.1 where it crashes.

Any suggestions are very welcome

If it runs with older version then just use playonlinux and choose whatever wine version that works.

Did you by any chance get it to run? I'm struggling with the exact same issue, play on linux didn't help me too..

Well I did get it to work. But in another way then expected. I have recently gotten the Update to 18.04 dialog for while, and gave the update a go. An everything went smoothly, and even Wine works as before. So the question is, has Wine been fixed or do you need make a fresh install of 16.04 + Wine and the update to make it work?
