Booting to USB trying to revert to Unity

I'm a novice at troubleshooting Ubuntu, so bear with me.

I recently installed Gnome on an old Dell Dimension 4600 running 16.04, and now it freezes on the logo screen while booting.

None of the other solutions I'm finding, such as booting to GRUB or trying to get to Safe Mode or text mode are working. So I've booted to a 16.04 thumb drive to hopefully edit the configuration of the main installation and set it back to Unity.

What steps do I need to take next?

(Doing a complete reinstall isn't an option. Long story about wi-fi adapters and dragging a barely-functioning machine from room to room. Trust me.)
