Just FYI for those coming here trying to get Steam working on Ubuntu 18.04 like I did and finding the above link not working because the original author pulled their code after Microsoft bought Github. I have forked the code from the below link (my repo linked below), but this is what I did in the meantime:
Code:
$ wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/digideskio/steam-launcher/master/steam-launcher.sh
$ chmod +x steam-launcher.sh
$ ./steam-launcher.sh
Then, at the window that was launched and is seen above, I selected Patch Steam Runtime, and because I was running it for the first time, it installed no problem.
Furthermore, I ran it from the default launcher, and it launched no problem from then on. Note that I did not feel the need to full on install it, nor to pull the full repo in order to do so, and haven't had any issues.
Also, if you feel the need to, or the above link no longer works, here is my repo on github (I am not a maintainer, but will do what I can if needed/possible): https://github.com/elheffe80/steam-launcher
