16.04 failed to boot, recovery mode does not recognize password

16.04 on dual boot setup (Windows 10), has worked very well for months and months. Windows upgraded last night, now Ubuntu fails to boot. Tried recovery mode -> failsafe graphics, then screen asks for root password (for maintenance) and refuses to accept password. Then I cannot return to choices normally available in recovery mode. Then screen freezes.

    What to do?

    Any and all suggestions appreciated.

Windows installation is on a separate disk, Ubuntu on its own disk. Grub works normally.

Time to use an install disk or USB tab to boot the system. As long as the root disk is not encrypted you can mount it, chroot over and then reset the password. I realize it sounds weird. Let me know if you need a step by step.
