Problem in 17.0.4 updating using Synaptic Package Manager

When I try to Reload in Synaptic Package Manager I recently get the response:

"Could not download all repository indexes

The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct."

"The repository 'http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu zesty Release' does no longer have a Release file.Updating from such a repository can't be done securely, and is therefore disabled by default.See apt-secure(8) manpage for repository creation and user configuration details. The repository 'http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu zesty-updates Release' does no longer have a Release file.Updating from such a repository can't be done securely, and is therefore disabled by default.See apt-secure(8) manpage for repository creation and user configuration details. The repository 'http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu zesty-backports Release' does no longer have a Release file.Updating from such a repository can't be done securely, and is therefore disabled by default.See apt-secure(8) manpage for repository creation and user configuration details. The repository 'http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu zesty-security Release' does no longer have a Release file."

    This was working fine before.

    See: https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2382832
you can follow howefield's post as to how to upgrade, or download a clean copy of either 16.04 or 17.10 (now 17.10.1) and do a clean and fresh reinstall.

Wow ! What does Ubuntu do ? Stop supporting a release some short time after it comes out ? I had just upgraded from 16.10 to 17.04 a short while ago and it has already reached end of life. Does Ubuntu continue to support any release for more than 6 months or so ? It seems not. Most Linux distros actually try to support their releases for a few years before pulling the plug. It seems as if Ubuntu is an OS that must be constantly upgraded to be used.
