Can "size" show filesize totals, not just numbers of items?

It's great to know that a folder contains 315 items, but it's also good to know whether that same folder contains 3 megabytes worth of files or 14 GB.

Can the file manager show file sizes of directories? Is there a way to get it to do that?

    Thank you!

I like ncdu. It's in the repos. It's small.

Which file manager are you using; which version of Ubuntu?

I use thunar in Xubuntu and a custom action I have in thunar allows me to right click any folder and choose "Disk usage" from the context menu for a directory using ncdu.

I am using 16.04 and I have not installed any other Desktop environments or system enhancers, save grsync..I guess that's more of a utility than a system modification.

I'm using the file manager which appears in the toolbar when you install 16.04..I don't know how to get it to show me its name but it looks like a filing cabinet with its one drawer open.

    Thank you!

In thunar, right-click and choose Properties. It shows an item count and disk usage.Screenshot_2018-01-13_20-44-56.png

Thank you..ncdu is very nice, quick, powerful. I suppose that displaying file size totals in the file manager windows would take too much cpu power?

I like to conserve and not squander cpu juice...
