Netgear Wireless N-300 USB adapter WNA3100 install

First let me say I had never seen linux running until 2 days ago.

I just finished installing Lubuntu on my old desktop pc that ran an outdated windows XP. I got my ethernet to work and now I'm trying to install this older netgear adapter so I can use this PC in another room.

I've been searching and trying to figure it out since last night and I feel like I've made very little progress. I downloaded the windows driver and tried to install it using ndiswrapper? If that makes any sense.

I finally decided to make an account here and ask.

Is it the same device that chili555 is referring to here?

Yep that appears to be the same output I get.

    I'll read through this.

    Thanks

Oh well that's not good. No wonder I'm having problems with it.

    Different question then.
What do you guys recommend for connecting an old Desktop to wireless?
Are there any adapters that are known to work well with linux?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

There are a few that work well, a few of us have the TP Link TL-WN722N 150 Mbps model. It is about the same size as the Netgear but has an external antenna. No drivers to download as it is supported by the 14.04 kernel and newer. I don't know if it worked in 12.04 but that version will be unsupported soon

Okay thank you very much I'll look around.

I feel stupid for not finding that thread before. I found a few netgear threads from chili555 but not that particular one.

    Anyways thanks again.

I actually got the WNA3100 mailed to me from Jeremy! When I opened it, I knew it was a torture test. He wanted to see if smarty boy could get it to work when he hadn't. I couldn't either.

Note to searchers: If Jeremy can't get it to work and I can't get it to work, then it can't work. Save your time and heartache and get another device. I also own and recommend the TP Link TL-WN722N.

Boy! I'm glad I didn't start banging my head against the wall again. When I got it, yeah, torture test - that's about right!
