static popping noise in speakers

I'm on linux mint 18.3 right now, but this problem happens to me on Ubuntu and all versions of mint I have tried. Randomly I get a pop sound in my speakers that sounds like when you plug a speaker in and the metal part touches the port before it goes all the way in. Kind of a static pop.

Anyone know how to fix this or anything? I'm kind of worried it's going to damage my speakers.
