    Update or update ubuntu 16.04

I think something is broken or messed up Ubuntu repo management wise. I too have the same errors when I try to update a 16.04.2 LTS system.

It appears that some of the repos pointed to in the sources files are either new or taken offline. This results in an incomplete update command execution and thus the upgrade command fails as the packages list is not updates/complete/valid.

I have tried changing the sources from the UK to US, FR, IN, GR, DE so its not a individual repo problem - it's bigger than that. But until this is fixed the systems will not update - why there maybe so many threads on cron updates not working too.

The back end of another failing "# apt-get update" command:

    Code:
    Err:20 http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial-security/main Sources
      Connection failed [IP: 91.189.88.152 80]

    Have you run:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get clean
    sudo apt-get update
show us any errors from the update command
EDIT: If the above dose not clear things up to "upgrade" then give this a try:
    Code:
    cd /etc/apt
    sudo mv sources.list sources.list.original
And proceed to run your update again:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get upgrade
Let us know and Good Luck.

Thanks for the pointers, I have had about 10 diff sources from around the planet, none have worked. Here is the output from the latest commands (I cut the stuff from further in the update putput as it was error free)

Well what you have tried in the past would be a unknown for me, as there is nothing in your posts that actually state what you have tried. (Outside of changing the sources from the UK to US, FR, IN, GR, D)
Now this will be a tedious effort to try to solve this issue. (Just a heads up)
I have seen a handful of box's here iin UF with similar problems. (in 16.04)
I don't see any added PPA's that you may have added that could also result with this problem at hand.
Can you show me this please:
    Code:
    cd /etc/apt
    ls
Please run the code one line at a time and paste back here.

Re: Update or update ubuntu 16.04

    What I did.
    1. I checked the DNS response for the erroring hostname on multiple servers on the internet to ensure I wasn't getting a stale response.
    2. I went here : https://repogen.simplylinux.ch/ and tried to get new sources from different countries to see if the repo I was using was corrupt somehow. For each I remarked or removed the old contents and then added the new contents.
    3. I tried to connect to the identified servers to see if they were indeed Ubuntu servers - while they were all ubuntu servers several had default apache pages and the ones generated the errors didn't have the necessary folders or files.
    4. I did try to write all this in the post last night but the forum would not allow me to add or update any threads
