Xubuntu: How do I start mining for bitcoins?

I am running a 64 bit Xubuntu OS based laptop. I am wanting to start mining for bitcoins. Now, a some-what friend of mine mentioned net hash, however, I think this friend meant hash net. He mentioned a client I can download from their site but I am not seeing one and I hardly know him, nor do I have his number or anything else to ask for assistance. So, neatness to say, sense I really don't have any friends or any computer techies willing to help, I came to this community in hopes for more help and or assistance from people who may know what they're doing or know what and how to do it. Please, again, I am wanting to mine for bitcoins LEGALLY. Any help is much appreciated. I just don't got the cash to go out and get ant series devices or miner hardware...
