Question OMG Linux Froze + Crashed!!

    Hi all,

Still fairly new to Linux......I can't believe it crashed on me tonight. I never thought it was possible. I was brainwashed to think it couldn't crash!! I actually think it's been over 2 years since I last saw a crash like this in Windows 7.

Any back to the indestructable Linux ..... even the xkill command wouldn't even work (i'd setup a shortcut for it)

I was watching a video via Kodi and surfing webpages on my other screen.... and all of the sudden video stopped, I could still hear the audio. Webpage went completely white. Mouse could still move but did nothing. CTRL-ESC did nothing. No response from bluetooth keyboard or laptop keyboard.

I forced it shut holding down the power key. Started up again and seems back to normal.

Curious if anyone can pin point the problem to help me, I will paste a snippet (last 2-3 minutes of syslog) - any ideas?

    Also post the output of
    Code:
    ls /usr/share/xsessions
    please.

    Kubuntu doesn't use gdm AFAIK.

    And comments such as
Still fairly new to Linux......I can't believe it crashed on me tonight. I never thought it was possible. I was brainwashed to think it couldn't crash!! I actually think it's been over 2 years since I last saw a crash like this in Windows 7.
may cause your thread to be derailed. So it maybe a good idea to keep to the point

    cat /ect/*-release
That's a typo, it should be /etc rather than ect.

Note that having several desktop environments on the same system can cause problems.

Developers of each desktop environment may not envisage such mix-n-match situations.

oh yes, that can cause issues since multiple "applets" and such will be installed.

Kodi is not needed unless you are running the system on TV and need large desktop interface and remote control support. for viewing videos on PC VLC should be more than adequate.

but enough about desktops. Linux like any other OS can crash. the reasons for crash can be different. sometimes they are easy to pinpont other times they are not. older logs form previous session might provide a clue.

if you experience the desktop crash there are a few options before doing the power down via button:
    - switching to different virtual console using ctrl+alt+F2 for example
    - using the REISUB command (it might need to be enabled on Ubuntu: https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2220356 more info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_SysRq_key)
Read the easy to understand, lots of pics Ubuntu manual.
Do i need antivirus/firewall in linux?
Full disk backup (newer kernel -> suitable for newer PC): Clonezilla
User friendly full disk backup: Rescuezilla

    Hi,

Originally I just downloaded Ubuntu 17.10. You may find in other posts I had issues with the standard ubuntu/gnome desktop and somebody suggest they use KDE as it works alot better on external monitors etc. I found this to be true in my case. (KDE on Ubuntu I understand to be Kubuntu, is that correct?)

Not sure where cinammon came from or kodi (I do have kodi as an app, but not sure why it's available to boot into)

What is your recommendation? I am extremely happy with the current KDE environment, I don't really care about the rest. Are they easy to remove?

I just did the CTRL-ALT-F2 to see what you were talking about but nothing happened?

Kodi is not just an app. it is basically a desktop. like i wrote, if you don't need it full screen on TV (or that you are running media server, then you don't need it.

KDE is still under heavy development at the moment. some bugs are out some are recurring. it still seems to have good multi monitor support. so if you need that then stay on it.

you can also investigate Neon distribution (stable OS / upgraded KDE).

They are not as easy to remove as they are to add. lets say they create dependencies and removing them also removes dependencies, which might be needed by another desktop. since linux is modular you could remove all and install only the one you like. i think that could work. though easier might be to install it all fresh.
I just did the CTRL-ALT-F2 to see what you were talking about but nothing happened?
    what about alt+f2? or ctrl+alt+F1?

to exit virtual console it should be ctrl+alt+F7 or pressing alt+right arrow repeatedly (to cycle through the consoles)

No response on any of those combinations except for ALT+F2 - which is only a shortcut to plasma search.
