So I did, I was not able to execute the four commands (apt-get update, etc) from recovery mode because I am not on a network, so no internet in recovery mode. From the log in screen (already connected to DSL) I did crtl-alt-1 and then executed the four commands several times. I did not help. I still get the Failed to to start Load Kernel Modules and no audio. Here is the content of my boot.log in case it offers any clue, sorry it's so long. I really appreciate your help. Thank you.

Update: I commented out f71882fg and no more failed to load kernel modules error messages after that, however audio still does not work.

Re: 14.04 to 16.04 upgrade results in Failed to start Load Kernel Modules

    Audio problem solved

With the help ofthis pagehttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure Irealized that the online upgrade from 14.04 to 16.04 failed toupgrade the kernel. Therefore no audio. After running sudo aptinstall linux-generic, the kernel updated from 3.xx to 4.xx and theaudio was back. Thank you to the community for all the helpfulinformation.
