trying to install windows 10/7 on ubuntu 16 (updated). With standard iso's i get an irql not less than BSOD. It looks like my machine HW supports virtualization. Have any others run into this? is it a HW issue?

Cannot tell what you actually did. Can't tell what HW is being used.
How did you setup the VM (virtual settings)?
How did you attempt to install Windows?
Did you use virtIO for disk and networking?
Are you using SPICE+QXL or VGA or Cirrus?
What hardware (physical) is this running on?
I've been running Win7 on a KVM VM since 2010-ish. Works well. It is actually a media center TV recording virtual machine.
