I did the upgrade this way on a newly installed 17.10. It's only a little different compared to the proposed methods and I didn't get the software-properties-gtk crash.

sudo sed -i 's/artful/bionic/g' /etc/apt/sources.list
sudo sed -i 's/artful/bionic/g' /usr/share/python-apt/templates/Ubuntu.info
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo reboot

I will post this in the sticky as an alternative method to upgrade to a new development cycle as an early adopter.

This worked excellently on my xubuntu box upgrade.

@Chanath, that's not needed since the python-apt update is in bionic now.

That's *really* bleeding edge. I don't know any Ubuntu developers who routinely run with -proposed enabled during the development cycle.

That's correct. Some developers told me (IRC) the proposed repos should remain disabled during the development cycle.
