Team Arena in game menus blank

So I reinstalled Quake 3 Team arena via ioquake recently for a lan party- when the linux users went into a game and hit escape to get the in-game menu to join a team all the in game menus are just blank gray with no works on them. Works fine in windows- has anyone else encountered this? How do you fix it? We can start a server and get into a map so most of the functionality is there- I don't understand why this would be the missing piece.

is this some linux version or via Wine?

what if they just use console to connect?
