I recently built a new PC with no separate graphics card and loaded Ubuntu on it. I am unable to figure out how to get both of my monitors working on it though. I have one monitor connected to the DVI port on my motherboard and that works fine. However, the second monitor, which I had to buy a DVI <-> VGA adapter for because my motherboard only has one DVI, isn't working. When I plug it in, nothing displays, and my first monitor starts flickering pretty badly.
Setup:
CPU: Intel Core i3-7100
Mobo: MSI B250M PRO-VD
Monitors: Dell U2415 (Each with an HDMI -> DVI cable, one with the DVI <-> VGA adapter on the end)
xrandr output with both monitors plugged in:

I don't know why that shows a DP-1 connected, since they are both HDMI.
Any tips on where to start debugging? I don't even know what the culprit is here (Graphics, monitor, vga->dvi adapter...). Would I save a lot of hassle if I just bought a cheap video card that had two DVI ports?
