Ubuntu 16.04.3 Xenial Xerus point release and the LTS future...

Ubuntu 16.04.3 was released few days ago. Those who use Ubuntu 16.04 are LTS users and would upgrade to next LTS release. It would be interesting to know, how they'd feel, when they find themselves with an unfamiliar desktop environment.

Has anyone made a poll or survey about it?

Not a thing , you can tweak Gnome shell to look like Unity.

That's not a solution at all!

Do you think everyone, who use Ubuntu 16.04 LTS would want to embrace gnome-shell? If they would, they'd have moved long time ago to Ubuntu-Gnome 16.04. I am talking about those, who use Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and then move to next LTS. Those, who had been moving from one Ubuntu LTS to a newer are used to the Unity DE. Ubuntu 16.04 LTS is a full desktop environment without a need for any "extensions" to make it workable, or pretty. Most probably, they'd move to such DEs with visible menus on top of the app window.

I think that by the time 18.04 LTS comes along, anyone who's going to be upgrading will be well aware they are going to lose Unity and gain Gnome. There will be no surprise. It is not a secret. People are already well aware and we're months away. You know it's happening. So does most of the Ubuntu universe.

You're not asking for a solution. You're asking how people will feel if they upgrade and end up with an unfamiliar desktop environment. I think they'll feel prepared for it as they will know what's coming before they upgrade (unless they have been living in a wardrobe for the last year or so).

Anyone upgrading from a previous LTS release to the next LTS is probably not a new user. In case you were unaware, and just for interest sake, Gnome was the default DE in Ubuntu for years until it changed to Unity (12.04?). The sky didn't fall in then, either.

That's about changing gnome shell to look like Unity. There is a bit of a wanting there. Mate also have a way to get the panel look like Unity. There's one for KDE too.

I am not a Unity person, but I wasn't against it. In this working week, I've been using Unity on 17.10 without Gnome shell. I didn't have a single hitch. I didn't also had to install numerous extensions.

    In case you were unaware
    My first Ubuntu was 4.10

a solution to what? there is no problem in the first place .. you're trying to raise one out of nothing!

And i believe you got all backwards , Unity is just a graphical shell , Gnome is a real full desktop environment.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unity_(user_interface)

And like Bucky Ball said , "Gnome was the default DE" , until 12.04 , and Unity had a tweak tool for a reason .. and it's buggy and ugly. So if you want to blame or point fingers for this transition blame canonical for starting unity in the first place because they fail, and switching back to gnome tells me that Gnome has succeeded .. " if you don't get the picture re-adjust the frame " .

Now, this is the community forums not canonical! .. So what is the point of this thread again?

    So?
"Extensions" would make your gnome-shell look like Unity to make you happy. Good for you!

Well that's an option if it would make them happy! I don't use Gnome,KDE and never used Unity.

Gnome is already featured rich , and if you read the definition of extension .. you should have a clear picture!
    http://www.dictionary.com/browse/extension

... So now i guess in essence you've answered your rhetorical question! thaha

Re: Ubuntu 16.04.3 Xenial Xerus point release and the LTS future...

    Greetings,
I suppose that if someone is testing Unity Desktop in the dev version then the question "what place will this have in the future" is a good question. The testing of Unity in these threads has been interesting and the question is valid, otherwise the testing was a waste of time. Also, the testing of Unity in the dev version was requested. So to the OP thanks for all of the effort.

Realistically, I'm am seeing wayland-client in the downstream (but not running) and mir in the downstream (but not running) and there is no doubt in my mind that X-server is out. However, with Alpha just ahead there is no telling what the final mis-mash will be like. Probably some half baked 17.04/18.04 concoction. In the mean time I'm reluctantly loving Gnome and Wayland.

Are you saying that an upgrade from stock 16.04 to 16.04.3 changes the desktop environment? Or are you talking about when 18.04 comes out?
