    Lightbulb Unwise computer "improvements"

    Hi,

Not entirely sure how this will go, but I thought of a really pointless idea, and thought it would get a chuckle or a facepalm. I imagine other people would have their own "improvements" to share...

    Here goes mine:

    • Buy an 8TB external hard drive and format the whole thing as swap

    Re: Unwise computer "improvements"

    and?

I picked up an 8T disk last week (great deal). Didn't do the swap thing, since I avoid swap on servers - RAM is cheap.
    Code:
    sdg 8:96 0 7.3T 0 disk
    └─sdg1 8:97 0 7.3T 0 part
      ├─istar--8TB-back3--a (dm-6) 252:6 0 3.5T 0 lvm /misc/b-D3
      └─istar--8TB-back3--b (dm-7) 252:7 0 3.5T 0 lvm /misc/b-D4
Decided to make it backup storage. Leaving a little unused storage so it can be added to each LV when needed. It is nice to have a little warning before additional disks need to be purchased.

Here's something I see often in the analogue world. Buy a really expensive top of the line latest i7, 32Gb RAM, 4Gb Nvidia GPU computer so you can surf the net, watch a few movies, listen to music and check emails. You know you want to waste your money!

My one brother in law I seen once touching a screwdriver to various parts of his motherboard with the power lead attached telling me "I know its not broken, look it sparks, there is power, earlier it was totally dead, can you fix it then or what ?

Get so dumbfounded by the dropping cost of storage that you purchase 500 GB, then 1 TB hard drives in preparation for system builds... that never happen... leaving you years later with slowly obsolescing, never used HDDs in boxes.

Never believe them when they say you can upgrade your cpu at a later date. You will not. You may not. You will have to replace the motherboard when you do.

If you do upgrade your cpu, you might get a 15% improvement in processing speed. For this you will spend $300.00 and have to buy a special fan that doesn't fit in your case very well. Your computer will never not rattle again.

Installing Lisp does not a computer improve. Rather use a real language like C.
