Question Connection issues Lubuntu installation on an old PC

    Introduction
I am new to the Linux world, so I apologise in advance if I am not explaining myself well or if I am doing something wrong.
I just recently managed to install the latest Ubuntu version (17.04, 64 bit) on a Lenovo PC just a couple years old.

I then decided to try and revive an old PC my parents had [I believe a MS-1012 with 2 GB of RAM and 1.6 GHz processor] by installing the latest compatible Lubuntu version (17.04, 32 bit). And that's where I encountered the most serious problems.

    The problems

    1. Ethernet doesn’t work
    2. Wi-Fi, too, doesn’t work

But Wi-Fi at least didn’t work under Windows too, so I bought a Wireless adapter [a TP-LINK TL-WN725N] which worked under Windows.

    The complications
On this old PC I am completely offline (this is the problem I want to solve), so I cannot download anything or install packages using apt-get.
Some essential (or so I think) commands are apparently not included in the latest Lubuntu installation, such as make or ifconfig.

    What I tried

    • Regarding Ethernet:
I tried a bunch of stuff I found using the magic of Google and Ubuntu forums, but ultimately I accomplished nothing, in part because many solutions required apt-get (remember: I am offline) and I think I miss many useful terminal commands.
    • Regarding the not working Wi-Fi:
I tried installing the wireless adapter's manufacturer's drivers (by downloading them on the other PC and transferring them using an USB stick), but I needed the make command. Then I started searching for a way to install the make command (e.g. installing the build-essential package), but it is impossible probably incredibly difficult to do so while offline. I tried following guides like this: http://www.webupd8.org/2009/11/get-l...endencies.html to download the .deb packages needed on the other Ubuntu laptop, but since the architecture is different (I also tried downloading the i386 packages) I could not install them (I got an “error while processing gdb”)

I also tried other linux distributions (such as Puppy Linux, LXLE..), but they all had the same problems regarding Ethernet and Wi-Fi and many of them failed to install at all.

    Conclusion
I am starting to lose hopes about being able to connect to the internet on this laptop using Linux. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!

Here the lshw (without the wireless adapter inserted into a USB port. Should I change that?):

Re: Connection issues Lubuntu installation on an old PC

16.04 is a long term service release. 17.04 has a service life of 6 months. So, I would get hold of 16.04 and try running a live session and see if the internet works there. I am betting it will. If it does, then install 16.04 and you'll be good for a few more years rather than a few more months.

I have 16.04 (Xubuntu) running on some real old machines with no issues. (And they are slower than your's and have less memory.) I am not that familiar with Lubuntu.

Re: Connection issues Lubuntu installation on an old PC

    Thanks for the reply!
In the meantime I did exactly try 16.04, but it gave me exactly the same issues.
Luckily I also found somewhere an Ethernet>USB adapter and manged to get the wired connection working (so, apparently, at least for the Ethernet it could be a mulfunctioning physical port), and then I could install the drivers for the TP-LINK device and (after some ordeal) I manged to get the Wi-Fi working.

Now I have a different problem: I try to connect to my home Wi-Fi but it keeps prompting me for the password every 30 seconds or so, never connecting in a loop.
    Any ideas about that?

On a unrelated note, should I mark this thread as solved and open a new one specifically for this new problem, which is related even though not directly?

    Thanks in advance.

Salutations! and welcome to the forums.

you'll have a better chance receiving assistance if this post is on the Networking & Wireless section .. so lets wait for a forum staff to move this thread over there. or they may ask you to open a new one .. either way.. you'll need to run the wireless info script in this sticky https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=370108 , and paste the result in the thread in a [CODE] tag .

Re: Connection issues Lubuntu installation on an old PC

    Thank you wildmanne39

So we're here now , looking at the output of lshw , we see

    Code:
    *-network:1 DISABLED
                    description: Wireless interface
                    product: PRO/Wireless 2200BG [Calexico2] Network Connection
                    vendor: Intel Corporation
    logical name: wlp1s9
    configuration: broadcast=yes driver=ipw2200 driverversion=1.2.2kmprq firmware=ABG:9.0.5.27
the card is shown as 'disabled' when the wireless switch or key combination is set to turn off the wireless .. but everything else is in place looks fine driver's loaded, no missing firmware ,, what need to do now is to make sure the laptop wifi physical swtich is ON , or if the laptop doesn't have a physical one , look in the laptop's manual for a WiFi enable/disable function key/button.

then check with fkill to see if the wireless card is hardware/software blocked , in terminal run ~$ rfkill list all , then you'll have to run: ran :~$ rfkill unblock all .. to unblock .

Re: Connection issues Lubuntu installation on an old PC

as for the TP-LINK, it's the wireless N Nano USB adapter ...

    https://wikidevi.com/wiki/TP-LINK_TL-WN725N_v1
    https://wikidevi.com/wiki/TP-LINK_TL-WN725N_v2

one of these two , is in it !

while the usb adapter plugged in , run lsusb , and lsmod , uname -r ..

and post the result here in a [CODE] tag ..thanks!

    I should add the following:
    • My system experienced a (non fatal) internal error while running sudo apt dist-upgrade
    • After getting the Wi-Fi running I tried connecting also to my personal hotspot using my phone and it worked. So the problem is only with my home Wi-Fi? No other device has ever had such problems

    Thank you all!

P.S. I might be unable to answer promptly in the next few days, but I'll get back to try your suggestions as soon as I can

    The driver ipw2200 is blacklisted
    Code:
    [/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf]
    blacklist evbug
    blacklist usbmouse
    blacklist usbkbd
    blacklist eepro100
    blacklist de4x5
    blacklist eth1394
    blacklist snd_intel8x0m

    blacklist i2c_i801
    blacklist prism54
    blacklist bcm43xx
    blacklist garmin_gps
    blacklist asus_acpi
    blacklist snd_pcsp
    blacklist pcspkr
    blacklist amd76x_edac
    blacklist ipw2200
Open the file with an editor as root
    Code:
    gksudo leafpad /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
remove that line, save, close the editor and reboot.

Edit: Change ipw2200 with 8139cp in that line. The LAN card loads two drivers.

Well, it was me who blacklisted it.
I followed a guide to get the TP-Link working: I installed the driver (8188eu), but the device still didn't work, so I searched and found a solution in a thread suggesting to disable the integrated driver (so I added the blacklist line) and it worked! The Wi-Fi started working (in the sense that I could finally see nearby Wireless networks and could connect to my personal hotspot) BUT I still was unable to connect to my home Wi-Fi due to the repeated request for the password.

Do you think this is an improvement over the solution above? In that case I would try that, but I now have another problem (sigh).

    New problem:
When the TP-Link didn't work I followed that: https://sites.google.com/site/easyli...set-0bda:8179-. Then I blacklisted the ipw2200 and the Wi-Fi situation improved. After some some reboots, though, I find that the 8188eu driver is no more installed on my system, it just disappeared! And consequently the Wi-Fi stopped working. Any ideas why?(In the meantime I'll see if I can install it again)

    Thanks in advance!
