Unsupported wireless device RTL8822BE on Ubuntu 16.04

I just bought a new Lenovo T470 preinstalled with Windows 10. After installing the latest Ubuntu 16.04 in parallel, I discovered that no wireless internet connection could be reached and displayed. A later post on AskUbuntu further ensures that my wireless device is too new to be supported by any kernel. At least claimed by a comment writer. It is a new RTL8822BE device.

Is there anyone who has experienced this problem? Would there be update available already to support the device? Is there anything I could attempt to solve the problem? I appreciate any suggestion/idea.

As it happens, I also saw your post on Ask Ubuntu and did some research. I hoped I could find an answer and trip up my esteemed colleague Pilot6. As it turned out, and as it almost always turns out, Pilot6 is quite correct. In fact, when I get stuck, he is one of the people I can turn to for help!

The only clue is here: https://github.com/lwfinger/rtlwifi_new/issues/233
It will as soon as Realtek releases the driver to me.
    L. W. Finger is involved in the development of almost all of the Realtek drivers for Linux.

I have two suggestions. First, run:
    Code:
    lspci -nnk
Find the pci.id for your device, perhaps something like 10ec:b822. Google it along with the keyword Linux or Ubuntu and check for yourself.

Second, get a fully supported USB wireless for US $12-15 and use it for six months or so and check back.

Thanks chili555. Indeed after some research on 10ec:b822, there is another post on askubuntu : https://askubuntu.com/questions/9263...king-on-ubuntu. I think I will keep looking on Realtrek these months.

As suggested, I think I am going to buy a TP-Link TL-WN722N 150 Mbps USB wifi device. There is another post on recommended Wifi USB for Ubuntu forum.

    Hi

    Cannot disagree.

    I see this

    • WiFi 802.11 ac
    • Intel 8265 2x2 11ac

Intel Dual Band Wireless AC(2x2) 8265, Bluetooth Version 4.1

for a Lenovo T470, combined WiFi and Bluetooth.

    So it makes me think...

The Intel should work perfectly and at AC speeds. Recommended.

Re: Unsupported wireless device RTL8822BE on Ubuntu 16.04

UPDATE: My colleague Jeremy31 pointed out this site that says it includes the driver for your device: https://github.com/rtlwifi-linux/rtlwifi-next He reports that the driver will not compile on his 16.04 system using kernel version 4.4-xx. It does compile, albeit with a few warnings, possibly harmless, on my 4.10-xx kernel, the default for Ubuntu 17.04.

I think you can download 17.04 and run a live session by either DVD or USB to try it. After you boot the live session and select 'Try Ubuntu,' get a working internet connection:
    Code:
    sudo apt update
    sudo apt install git
    git clone https://github.com/rtlwifi-linux/rtlwifi-next
    cd rtlwifi-next
    make
    sudo make install
    sudo modprobe rtl8822be
    Is your wireless now working?

    Hi

Are we at cross purposes in this thread?

It is supposed to have an Intel WiFi [Operating Systems Microsoft Windows 7*,Microsoft Windows 8.1*, Microsoft Windows 10*,Linux*(limited feature support), Android] - Intel 8265 2x2 802.11ac,Dual Band,80MHz, 2x2, MU-MIMO according to the Lenovo website, but it is being reported as a Realtek by the OS?

    https://www.intel.com/content/www/us...000005511.html

    Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 8265 4.6 iwlwifi-8265-ucode-22.361476.0.tgz

However if it's really a Realtek, then to complement the advice given above...

    CONDITION: Something loose in cockpit.

    SOLUTION: Something tightened in cockpit.

This computer is not equipped with an Intel 8265 nor a Realtek 8723be. The device is new enough that it is shows only this in lspci results
    Code:
04:00.0 Unassigned class [ff00]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device b822
In the source code at line 113 in https://github.com/rtlwifi-linux/rtl...b/master/pci.h we see
    Code:
    #define RTL_PCI_8822BE_DID	0xB822	/*8822be*/

    Sorry for the late reply.

Indeed this works out. I retreated to use a wifi USB meanwhile. Finally, feel relieved.

    Hi

OK. Enough egg on my face for an omelette, but I still tried. Looking around Google I found

Opensuse has drivers for the BT part of 8822 so perhaps when I get in front of me laptop I can post a link, in the hope that the WiFi part becomes available.
