    Also, do you think 18.04 would break Unity?
    There are bugs and issues. Some a dog's breakfast. The 18.04 cycle will be mainly focused on GNOME as flagship unless Canonical changes their mind. (highly unlikely) and this may cause a bad experience with unity7 if it is not maintained. Therefore we need maintainers for the cycle. The more , the merrier. As I say .. all who have signed the CoC are invited to join the unity7 maintainers team. If we have a solid team core with some experience and willing to learn then we may get more help than expected from Canonical. If nobody joins and expects me and my two other members to handle all bugs and upgrades during 18.04 then that is a lot to ask don't you think? And if individuals want to work on corner cases... that just plain defeats the whole concept of the community spirit.

    Regards..

    For the easy fix, look in debian/rules

    I already provided the filename for the more complicated fix in comment #55. "Easy" is fine, it's what Ubuntu has been doing for several years.

    I see he told you.
    I suspect in the case of a debian/ file change you'd need to present as a debdiff (patches are source only i believe

    So read up on that. You'd also need to be able to sign your changes (the harder part of this though you'll only need to set up once..). Then start a bug & attach the debdiff inc. bug # in change description. (if this is the method..
    For this deal you'd need at least devscripts, cdbs, gnome-pkg-tools installed.
    I'll see if I can find you a page on debdiff creation.

    edit; this is laid out ok, noting in this case you're neither applying or creating a patch.

    @mc4man, for Unity packages, I'd prefer a merge proposal against the bazaar branch for the specific project being fixed.

    I guess that it will end up in Universe.
    Hi. Just to be clear: unity has been in universe for a couple months. If there are no maintainers, there is a real risk of Unity being completely removed from Ubuntu. This already happened to Unity8.

    So here's the siimple fix from file 'rules'

    Code:
    #!/usr/bin/make -f

    include /usr/share/cdbs/1/rules/debhelper.mk
    include /usr/share/cdbs/1/rules/utils.mk
    include /usr/share/cdbs/1/class/gnome.mk
    include /usr/share/gnome-pkg-tools/1/rules/gnome-version.mk
    include /usr/share/gnome-pkg-tools/1/rules/clean-la.mk

    export DEB_BUILD_MAINT_OPTIONS = hardening=+all
    export DEB_LDFLAGS_MAINT_APPEND = -Wl,-z,defs -Wl,-O1 -Wl,--as-needed
    include /usr/share/dpkg/buildflags.mk

    DEB_CONFIGURE_SCRIPT := ./autogen.sh
    DEB_CONFIGURE_EXTRA_FLAGS += --libdir=\$${prefix}/lib/$(DEB_HOST_MULTIARCH) \
                                 --disable-update-mimedb

    DEB_DH_MAKESHLIBS_ARGS_unity-control-center = --no-act
    DEB_DH_MAKESHLIBS_ARGS_libunity-control-center1 += -- -c4

    binary-post-install/unity-control-center::
        ./panels/info/logo-generator --logo panels/info/UbuntuLogoBlank.png --text "ubuntu 17.10" --output debian/unity-control-center/usr/share/unity-control-center/ui/UbuntuLogo.png

    common-binary-post-install-arch:: list-missing
    Do I have to join the Ubuntu Desktop Team?

    Could you simply walk me through 'merge proposal' ie; what do I need to do now?

    Regards..
