Purple screen when booting up to the desktop with a command line look

When I booted up my computer I all worked fine but when I got to the desktop I got a purple screen,
but it still works but it's really laggy and not all the applications are working and I can't access nothing that was on my desktop.
has this ever happen to any of you, if so please let me know, especially if you know how to fix it.
    also I use ubuntu 10.04.

Are you aware 10.04 reached end of life a long time ago, try using a
supported version like 16.04.2 or 17.04 and see how that works

Post your hardware specifications, including graphic card so we can suggest latest Ubuntu versions to install.

Also, like suggested, 10.04 has been age old for quite some time. That should not be used anywhere.

I know that but i have been using 10.04 for a long time, mostly because I really like it.
my mother has a computer with Ubuntu 16.04 which i use from time to time but i really just like sticking with 10.04 I actually find it to run faster than my mothers computer and her computer is like one years old with decent hardware and mine is 6 years old with well i wouldn't say decent hardware compared to computers now a days.

WHen a project stops receiving any active updates and support, using it can be a security hazard.

If snappy is what you want, try Xubuntu? There are lot of options, you can even customize desktops and entire environments.

Processor : AMD Sempron 140 processor.
Graphics card :Nvidia geforce 7025 nforce 630a.
but I most likely will not be upgrading,
and I'm just wondering when you upgrade from 10.04 to lets say 16.04 would i lose all my data and files that are stored on my computer?

Because requesting support for such an old, unsupported release would require people to dredge up 7-year-old, incomplete memories; may result in situations that are impossible to address because of dropped support; and would leave you still with a vulnerable machine, please do not ask the community to commit its valuable volunteer time to 10.04.

The path to upgrading from an unsupported release to a current one is long, convoluted and more likely to result in a significant negative emotional event than technical success. Please start a new thread requesting support for installing a supported release without loss of data -- but realize you should still back up just in case.
