Can't say I'm surprised, always thought the "convergence" idea was stupid.

Re: End of Ubuntu Phone and Unity

I was just about to post this. I don't know where this topic should be posted but this is huge news.

I, for one, as someone who is just getting into Ubuntu standard after two months of installation, am a little unhappy about it since I really like Unity. I think it's by far the best DE that I've come across. However, I also like GNOME so I'm not too annoyed about it. If it were to go to something like XFCE or something, that wouldn't work so well for me. But I think GNOME is solid. As to whether I'll upgrade at the time of release I don't know, because 16.04 is excellent.

Oh come oooon.. It was so great idea to have Ubuntu on all of my devices - desktop, tablet and phone. I see so many people looking for Ubuntu phones online and all are sold out. Why is Canonical not developing and producing, what crowd asks for?

It should have never left it.

I'm actually weirdly pleased. I really like Unity 7 but GNOME is solid and innovative.

Ubuntu Abandons Unity, 18.04 LTS to ship with GNOME 3

Today, 5 April 2017, Mark Shuttleworth announced that Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, a year away at that time, will abandon the Unity desktop and ship with the GNOME 3 desktop instead, as Canonical moves away from its ambitions to produce a unified cell phone and desktop operating system and concentrates on desktop, cloud computing and Internet of things platforms instead.

Joey Sneddon of OMG Ubuntu says:
In an extraordinary blog post that I have yet to fully digest, Mark Shuttleworth has announced that Canonical is to end its investment in Unity 8, Ubuntu for Phones and tablets, and end its ambition to seek “convergence”.
    Thoughts?

Re: End of Ubuntu Phone and Unity

What makes anyone think Unity will go anywhere when it's no longer the official DE on Ubuntu? For those that don't remember, Gnome used to be the default DE for Ubuntu. Everything old is new again!

When Gnome was replaced by Unity, it forked off and remained popular, as is reflected with Ubuntu-Gnome going strong. It didn't go anywhere. Probably neither will Unity.

Don't worry; by 2020, if not before, those that care to will be running 'Ubuntu-Unity'. Some bunch of enthusiasts will probably go there and develop it.
