Scanner not recognised

Hello,

my desktop runs on ubuntu 16.04, and it recognises the Brother DCP-J562DW printer/scanner/photocopier (printing stuff poses no problem).
According to Synaptic, all the relevant scanner drivers are installed. But both simplescan and xsane tell me they can't find my scanner. I KNOW the scanner technically works, because the device does photocopies, which is essentially the same thing. It's just the computer and the scanning part of the device don't talk to each other.
Any ideas?
