All DEs/sessions are set up to use caja, mate-terminal and gedit as the preferred default applications where possible; just my personal preferences set up here.
Desktop environments have to be changed with the command "sudo update-alternatives --config x-session-manager" as NO easy switching is available with the lightdm greeter screen on a raspberry pi unit (at least that I've been able to find so far).
Environment, window manager, theme and icon details are all shown for each DE/session in the neofetch results.
Xfce is the stand out performer so far, much nicer/easier to use than LXDE and is quickly becoming the standard DE for me to boot into. There is a bit of menu clean up to do, as expected, with the multiple DEs installed; easily fixed and worth it so far with the extra choice of desktops to experiment with.
I have been enjoying the DE choice so much recently I went and cloned this Pi's microSD card to another unit and updated all UUIDs, /etc/fstab entries etc; so I now have two multi-DE raspberry pi units to use. Finally the increase in RAM to 4GB has made these units usable as a desktop alternative. Chromium works well for general browsing with firefox a bit sluggish still, though firefox has very much improved compared to using it on the pi 3B+ units I previously tested it with.
Cheers everyone, yeti.
